Frontier markets are the outliers. The term refers to countries that are not part of either the developed world or emerging market indices produced by index providers like MSCI and FTSE. They have attracted increasing attention in recent years, for several reasons: they offer diversification from developed and emerging markets, with limited correlationOkay so basically what that essentially means is you need to invest in Nigeria right now .
Also, many of the countries that appear to offer some of the best growth potential now appear outside the big MSCI indices. A prime example is Nigeria, which has been attractive to investors on both the debt and equity side for some years now, and which has received a new lease of investor interest after being declared part of the MINT investment bloc (Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey)

Michael Levy, investment manager at the Baring Frontier Markets Fund, highlights several areas of potential returns. At the top of the list is the Nigerian banking sector, where loan growth and improved cost controls are expected “in a market that has, in our opinion, significant room for growth.” There is also the forthcoming restatement of Nigeria’s GDP numbers – a process that has been underway for years but looks like to be close to completion – which is expected not only to revise upwards the size of Nigeria’s national economy but make it the biggest in Africa, overtaking South Africa.
