Just friends: Sir Salman Rushdie and writer Aita Ighodaro

His former Special Branch bodyguard has described him as an arrogant and tight-fisted socialist with a handshake like a wet fish, but at yesterday's Cartier polo Sir Salman Rushdie wanted to avoid such jibes as he indulged his talent for schmoozing the ladies.

For the second weekend in a row, Rushdie, 61, went to a society event accompanied by the statuesque writer Aita Ighodaro.

But while he happily posed with Aita for my picture, Rushdie was less keen to comment on former policeman Ron Evans' revelations in his book, barking: "I'm not talking about that."

It was left to Oxford-educated Aita, 25, to spout about her first meeting with the literary knight.

"I met him at Buckingham Palace," she trills. "My mum Clare was getting a CBE for services to business and he was getting his knighthood. We're not dating. We are just good friends."

But has Sir Salman, awaiting his divorce from wife number four Padma Lakshmi, been mentoring Aita's literary talents?
